AnnwynAnnwyn, Beneath the Waves holds a special place in my book, because the album's overall quality and creativity carve Faith and the Muse into a niche of their own. Faith and the Muse's scholarly passion for archaic literature and history is especially impressive. I love the way they have included ancient quotes in the lyric book to encapsulate the meaning of each song. Faith and the Muse are perfect for the modern Renaissance enthusiast, because they incorporate Medieval and archaic themes into their music. Several of the songs are ethnically traditional with a Welsh/Old English flair, but if you're searching for upbeat rock songs, several tracks fill that order too. William's sensuous dark voice appears on a few songs adding variety to Monica's singular voice.

OUTBURN/1996

Although more than half its songs work off traditional folk melodies and drumming, Annwyn isn't a medieval concept record or an easy appropriation of cool, romantic old stuff. Modern goth songs such as "Rise and Fall" and "The Hand of Man" explain how Monica Richards and partner William Faith receive visions from other spacetimes through broadband memory (where you remember incidents from other people's lives). The liner notes provide quotes that help unfold these visionary scenes of love and damnation, death and drowning, and myriad aetheric mysteries. Instrumentally, the songs vary from grandiose synth orchestras to bare clicking sticks keeping jig time. Richards' voice is full and warm in churchsong way;"Cernunnos" and "The Dream of Macsen" are broody ambient keyboard tracks with Faith doing emotional monologues on top, and "The Bird of Rhiannon" is elysian noise referring to a species of bird that used its song to bring sleep to the living and waken the dead.

Annwyn, Beneath the Waves

Here, thoughts cling airborne   To a sea of voice so glorious; mesmerizing
This is my body; this is my inner mind;   What lies beneath my eyes
Discarded years of elemental faith   Beckoned to a watery embrace with love upon his face
My appetite's unchanged

Sink into dream: these enchanted depths   The realm of muted wisdom
Slowly descend; trust ignites the darkness   And bliss is this drowning moment

Believe me I am sorry   To charm with bitter eyes; mesmerizing
Careless magic turns upon itself, washed down in ritual
Your coin and prayer can't feed the wishing well
The silence glistens on my skin; the water urges charity
I crave a grander offering   My appetite's unchanged

Here I remain   This is my body; this sea my inner mind
Find comfort in my arms   Winds beckon above the surface; storms wane forsaken
My gaze is baptism; mesmerizing

Come to me   Greet me with open arms   Mesmerizing

The Silver Circle

Come to life my deviltry   Possess this poor company
Our secret be benefit   Their unhappy lack of it
Awaken my trusting friend   My undisturbed reflection
So fluid your beauty   All gears and teeth

 Come Alive

Come to life my second skin   To protect the madness locked within
Yet I know a place where we can touch in tongues
Though words did betray us   Did bury our past   Cry blasphemy
Cancer masters instinct   Sad passive release

 Come Alive

Take my dear ones   The use of this spell may serve too well
Our mouth is our chalice   Our tongue our sword
And truth holds a dozen doors   One thrown open wide shall yield one more
Yet mystery remains above their eyes

 Come Alive

Cantus

"The lyrics to the song are in old Latin, and are not unlike the riddle of the Sphynx:
the mystery of the ancient female deity, later intertwined as a sexual monster.
Here are some of the lyrics and translations" - MR

saevym atque ferum vipereumque malum
quod pinnis volitans super aethera cuncta fatigat teneat possideat
semper suis amoribus perfruatur

Loose translation: She is "A savage and serpiform creature,
flying over the aether on her wings, exhausting one and all, let him have her, let him possess her,
in her embrace of love he will stay forever."

Dream Of Macsen

Hear me my beloved; I beckon thee through waves of dream and in mine
ears a voice whispers oceans of light and in thine eyes alone begins
this journey of mine; is this love? Thou art Love; thou art Truth;
thou art a vision resplendent and I am born with recognition;
for I have known thee a thousand years yet never known thee before; when
thy radiance spoke my name I was a king restored and my kingdom pales in
the gloriousness of thee and my fortunes mask an emptiness filled only
by this; where our world exists beyond this brilliant dream; I shall
find thee, thou art the answer; I will find thee, thou art the light
yet I am human and thy light dims with consciousness; I am man and my
love shall dim in thy conquest; I am passionately human and I shall
close my eyes to thee for truth proves me mortal to be; yes, this is
love and I must put my heart to sleep for this is love; true love dims
in human's keep and I am damned

Hear me my beloved I beckon thee through waves of dream
And in thine ears my voice whispers oceans of light
And in mine eyes alone begins this journey of thine

Hear me my beloved I have patiently awaited thee
For I remain confined within the realm of sleep
And in thy dreams I have long hoped thou wouldst see me

Hear me my beloved I beckon thee through waves of dream
And my voice shall resurrect the deity
And this vision shall awaken thee as thou ought to be

 For this is love

Fade And Remain

And if I'd the spell to claim your existence
Your clandestine thoughts; your soul's soft persistence
I'd follow the mirror aglow with your image
Your water-grave eyes and your lingering fragrance

But unknown by you; lost in the shadows   I Fade and Remain
Love incarnate; mere irreligion   I Fade and Remain

Oh my kind can dwell with infinite patience
My reverie thoughts have traveled great distance
Yet deign I embrace you with meek adoration
Your fragile humanity rised with contrition

Love incarnate; lost in perfection   You Fade and Remain
Youthful; Timeless; Deification   You Fade and Remain

Branwen Slayne

O my deare brother I am damnifyed at Caer Siddi
For myn housbonde hath this twelfmonth treated me with crueltie
Albe to please thee I didst cheerfullie accept his proffred hand
I was ne'er wary he was ruler of y Uffern land
For whan his gastfull subjekts they didst first espy hir freondlesse Queene
Eftsoone they wept for I to them was noughte but a living thinge
hence with despight his consorted kingdomes stonie hart eshewde
And I am thrall'd to sufferance in poverte and servitude

For I am one of three great queenes of the Cymry
Loneliness -- Patience -- Wisdom -- Happiness

O my brother thou art Kinge of y Island o the Mightye
alfeare of thy rage hath plac'd silent centenells at Caer Siddi
Ynow for bane or worse that may betide I send my gentil byrd
Whilst I bemone mine outcast state tho hold my tonges unthrifty worde
There mew'd withinne its tamed winge myn urgent message pleades thyn ayd
battailous make thy complement and reskue this most piteous mayde
Heerin this underwourldlye gloome I implore thee to appeare
And carrye me to Aber Alaw for I am buried there

 Loneliness -- Patience -- Wisdom -- Happiness
(Unigrwydd) (Amynedd) (Doethineb) (Llavenydd)

For I am one of three who broke their harts in griefe

•Hob Y Derri Dando
(Traditional Welsh Song)

Low ye hills in ocean lie   Hob y derri dando
Hide not Meirion from my eye   Hob y derri dando
Still one view oh let me take   Down derri down
Ere my longing heart do break   Down down hie derri down
My darling Mary do not frown   Down down hie derri down
My darling Mary do not frown

O'er the seas hath flown my heart   Hob y derri dando
O'er the seas my sighs depart   Hob y derri dando
And o'er the seas must she be sought   Down derri down
Who lives yet always in my thought   Down down hie derri down
My darling Mary do not frown   Down down hie derri down
My darling Mary do not frown

'Neath the seas shall I reside   Hob y derri dando
'Neath the water and the tide   Hob y derri dando
For my longing heart did break   Down derri down
When she another love did take   Down down hie derri down
My darling Mary do not frown   Down down hie derri down
My darling Mary do not frown

Cernunnos

Beneath the sediment of aeons   In ancient repose
My trust lay eroded by age   The old glory faded
And past times forgotten   My reign given way to my rage

Harmonious the centuries   The land and I were one
My Soil My water, My air   Bringer of light   And Master of night
In balance   The earth in my care

But with the passing of days   A new wind came blowing
With whispers of change   On its wing
This tide of corruption   Laid siege to my world   Usurping the throne of a King

Your new gods   Your new ways   All seek to dispel me
With doctrines of fear built on lies   The hidden one no longer   I claim my dominion
To the sun of your age   I arise...

...Of your anger   Your anger   Your ignorance   Your blindness   Your greed
Your progress   Your conquest   Your mania   Your need
Your sorrow   Your sickness   Your final, parting breath   Your hatred   Your bloodshed
Your future   Your death
I will have none   I will have none   I will have none   I will have none

I, dread lord of shadows   With broken spell   unto this dying age   I bid farewell...

The Hand Of Man

Come the tides   We hear tell of the mortal season   Fed rife with rhyme and reason   Tainted with despair

Kill-darkened skies   Painted black, so black with misery   Raining down with impunity
Oh, the cross we've brought to bear

In the treason fields   Where man again destroys what man built
Man wears the weighted cloak of man's guilt   For the blind we must remind

Raise your eyes   Behind a martyr's mask of supplication
I find you guilty by association   Mute, somehow divine

I Sing True   I can see right through you

Thirst for truth   Spit out the lies inside and search for meaning
The child in your hanging head lays bleeding   Another dream to drown

Ignorance   Seek your knowledge in the volumes of dust
Render all to ashes and rust   And child, bring that hammer down

I sing true   I can see right through you

These latter days   They bear eternal winter's coming frost
And the death of innocence   In this dying age   we wander lost

 Deny the Hand of Man

Celebrate   Wherever mercy falls drunk you'll find me
In the gutter, ever in the company   Of angels, and of kings

Millennium   All the memories will fade like twilight
Take your place on either side of midnight   And sing, dear brother, sing

I sing true   I can see right through you
Right on cue   That face you wear betrays you

*The Sea Angler
(Words written by Goethe)

There was a gentle angler who was angling in the sea
With heart as cold as only heart untaught of love can be
When suddenly the water rushed and swelled and up there sprang
A humid maid of beauty's mold and thus to him she sang

"Why dost thou strive so artfully to lure my brood away
And leave them to die beneath the sun's all scorching ray?
Couldst thou but tell how happy are the fish that swim below?
Thou wouldst with me taste of joy which earth can never know."

The water rushed the water swelled and touched his naked feet
And fancy whispered to his heart it was a love pledge sweet
She sang another siren lay more 'witching than before
Half-pulled half-plunging down he sank and ne'er was heard of more.

~Rise And Forget

I woke up tired I woke up down on my knees tonight   My eyes were wet and I felt so dead inside
A grieving fragment of myself distorted memory   Choking tears as I slam the door again

I swallow rage I taste its wisdom   Nomadic fears force sanctuary
I drink in truth I spit out meaning   Ever possessed by the collective psyche

On dread subconsciousness we spin and turn   Inherent images strap us in position
Autarchic instinct commands the assigned performance   The abduction scene the sacred horn dance
I am enthroned I am imprisoned   The mirror speaks to my third face
Regeneration eternal mindless   The questions wax the answers wane

Suffer Celebrate   I Sing My Praises I Curse My Name
Suffer Celebrate   The Spirit Comes To Life Ancestors Reanimate

Seduction leading straight from logic to nightmare   Virility misdirects the hunter's primal need
Extractions from a butcher's masterpiece   So split my skin and make me bleed
I woke up tired I woke up buried by dreams tonight   Compelled to kneel before another faceless beast
An ancient splinter of myself these are not my memories   Mutated visions theacentric reasoning

Suffer Celebrate   I sing my praises I curse my name
Suffer Celebrate   The spirit comes to life ancestors reanimate

I woke up tired...   I woke up down on my knees tonight...
